Lemon or lemonade?
Hi there
So but if background, bought the car used in February all seems okay until about a month ago when the transmission started to leak, tried to repair it myself to no avail and lost a rag in the process.
Took it to RCV and they have carried out a health check as well as fixing the issues but now I’m thinking have I bought a lemon and should I either carry on and repair them gradually or do I suck my losses and let it go now?
The issues identified on the health check:
Driver seat belt damaged
Prop shaft split
Front lower arms knock
NSF inner CV boot split
Both rear arms and pin bushes have excessive play
NSF wheel bearing has play
NSF and OSF inner steering joints have excessive play
Rear anti roll bar bushes have play
Slight play NSF anti roll bar bush
Rear brake pipes heavily corroded
What are your guys thoughts?

All standard items, you’re just playing catch-up.
Don’t forget to make sure the oil pump is the updated type. If that goes, bye-bye engine and you’ll deffo have a lemon meringue pie on your hands.

None of what you have listed above is a huge issue although will cost a few bob if a garage does it.
It sounds like the motor has had no TLC for some time. If your going to keep it it needs TLC, they all do!
When were the belts last done? Have they been done?
You've had 8 months or so out of the motor since you bought it and if its been trouble free you have not bought a lemon.
You have bought a motor that needs looking after, they all do.
If it were mine I would cost it all up then make a decision what to do.

Thanks all,
No belts haven’t been done and due in the 105k service, along with new oil pump type
Total estimates for all works on that list is approx £4500 + £1500 for 105k service belts.

You mean 2nd set of belts? They should have been done for the first time at 7 years ISTR.

Good point DSL
I have assumed they weren’t done and was going to include them in the 105k service.
How would I know it they have been done?

An invoice would be a start, otherwise assume it hasn’t been done.

Can you give us more info. What year/mileage is your car? What did you pay for it?
£6k bill sounds like an absolute p*$$ take. The belts price alone should sound alarm bells.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

Hi there
It’s a 2007 HSE with 100,000 miles on the clock.
I have assumed that the belts and oil pumps are original. When I purchased the car they gave it a PDI service with brakes and oil. No service history but new MOT. I paid £6k for it.
See image for prices estimates against works.
The timing belt service quote was around £1k mark without oil pump.

Just make sure you get the later type seatbelt with the buckle that matches yours as the earlier one won't clip into the female end.
Also if you buy a used one ensure you get one that is from a non accident damaged car, and refit the replacement with new bolts, as these should be changed when swapping it over.
Really easy job to swap it over, remove the battery when the car is asleep then just 3 bolts and 2 covers to remove and refit in place afterwards.Must stop buying shiny toys....
