Just read this on another forum, I wonder if there is any truth in it as it seems quite unbelievable if there is !
The reason why your crank split is that some idiot at the factory over stressed it, when straightening it after it had been ground. The culprit was eventually discovered and sacked on the spot!
He had been using 2 & 1/2 times more pressure that he was told to, thinking he was doing LR a favour, rather than binning cranks that needed more than the maximum force recommended to straighten them. He’d been doing it for 6 years.

Another one ...
Just spoke to a mate whose 2014 D4 engine seized. He bought it new and had it serviced on time very time by the dealership. Just had it seviced recently. He's pretty shocked.
I've read comments on here saying that it happens to all brands of cars, but it's the first time anyone I know has ever had an engine seize.
is there a specific manufacture date range for this problem?2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

Well my mate got lucky. Landrover have agreed to replace the engine free of charge. He has to pay the labour costs but has been quoted AUD$4k (£2300) by the dealer. Which he is happy with. I'd be very happy to pay $k to get a new engine in my D3 for $4k!
His D4 has done 170,000 km (105,000 miles).2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

got to ask..why he pays labour...LR pay for all or they dont...what happens if he refuses to pay labour ?

I had a similar experience with other expensive out of warranty parts failures (not crankshaft!) on a Merc that I bought new from a dealer - Mercedes offered to replace the parts free of charge but I had to pay for labour. Maybe it's an Australian consumer law thing. Or maybe they're just trying it on

To be fair to LR in UK they would pay nothing for that age and mileage!

The engine wont be a new one but a remanufactured short engine. Make sure they replace the Turbos whilst the body is off as they will need it soon after as the swarth will have damaged them.
In the UK the labour would be around £6k plus and the reworked short engine about the same.

Going back to the original question:
Yes it's normal to worry about something as catastrophic as a crankshaft failure. They obviously do happen, even if the percentage is small. Especially when, with earlier D4s, the cost of putting it right now is approaching the value of the car! But there's not an awful lot you can do about it other than regular servicing.
It's hard to know what the probability, statistically is of it happening. On forums such as this, those that it happens to will be posting. But nobody posts to say their crankshaft hasn't gone kaput today. I suspect that the only people who really have an idea will be JLR. Good luck with getting that out of them.
But, as has been said, there's still a good load of 'em still driving about.

Mine hasn't gone kaput today
In all seriousness, I may well have been lucky (and may regret posting this some time in the near future) but I'm on my third D4 SDV6. Had an 11 plate that did 170k before being sold on, then a 15 plate that had done just shy of 170k when it was sold on and now have a 16 plate that's touching 130k.
Thankfully all have been trouble free from the major incidents, though this last one has been something of a lemon, compared to the others, with transmission control solenoid playing up, EPB playing up, intermittent limp home traced to leaking inlet O ring and continuing air suspension issues.
(Forgot about the worn wheel rims that rendered the wheels useless too )
