I suspect that anyone with an ounce of inteligence would easily found out how to replace a tow bar. If I wasn't told here then I would have sorted this out with the dealer.

It is a good idea not to simply post - as this might stop an opportunistic person. Not that Im a crime expert but if I was going down that track Im not sure D3 tow bars would be my prime focus. I might use it to knock a door down though as it weighs so much Very Happy

The fact that this topic has covered 3 pages is probably more advertising than it deserves. If anyone was hoping not to draw attention to it - that hasn't been achieved here.

All sorted now and not easily - Its not just a walk up and steal item.
Thumbs Up

thats the problem mate, I could have yours off in a minute or two. very easily done and the how to was posted on this very site before it was removed and yes I said my piece there too which probably led to its removal, so there is a very valid reason to all you do gooders why some reactions are what they are. next time I wont bother

....or just politely explain (with no how-to details), the issue. No need to flame the 90%+ cases of innocents. That is the only point us "do-gooders" are making...

Anyway Martin's rule rules....play nice. Very Happy Very Happy

and can anyone tell me what the point is of having a lockable hitch as part of the multi-height towbar???

its not as if i'm going to undo the two bolts through the chassis and then stow it in the back of the car when i'm not using it.

I suspect it was originally designed as a removable option to take bike racks and have some height adjustment but possibly then had "stability issues" with some ball height combinations and was only marketed with the chassis bars.

Same logic on my D2 where it had both headlamp levelling AND self-levelling suspension Confused Once something is designed then it may be cheaper to continue with it but modify/add to solve the new problem.
 Cheers

Those of us in Oz with the new (and non-plough) Mitchell West hitch are no doubt happy to offer to any self-respecting thief our now-defunct LR lockable hitch. Very Happy

Lost towbar keys

I swap my 06HSE over for a 57HSE tomorrow morning and no amount of routing around in drawers and in the shed will reveal my towbar keys. I would very much appreciate a private message if it's easy to get the towbar off without the keys - otherwise I will ask the dealer (but we are swaping cars half way between London and Leeds) so would require a courier for towbar and replacement keys...

Looking forward to seeing if a MY08 is any different from my MY06.

regards Andy

Great argument folks and both sides have valid points. I just bought a 2006 HSE that came with the hitch but it is not locked and the previous owner had lost the keys. The hitch is strapped in the rear compartment, it is brand new but again, no keys. So I can use it but I also don't want anyone to steal it especially when I am out camping. What is the best way for me to secure the hitch? Do I ask for new keys from the dealer or do I replace the lock? If I order the lock, is it easily replaceable by common tools in my garage? I prefer to replace the lock as it will give me a set of keys that I only have.

I am an active member at the m5board.com site under the same user id, m5ccie with over 400 posts. I could email anyone a picture of the web site when I'm logged in to prove I am m5ccie.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Jim
