| Front Differential oil leak. |
|
If you have a front differential oil leak like my local dealer found at mine.

There could be an easy fix. According to the mechanic most diff's start leaking because the breather is blocked.
Mine cleary was blocked and so pressuring up when getting warm and pushing the oil through the seals.
The cure: Normally they just cut the top off the breather pipe off, but as mine probably will go off-road, he put a small filter on the breather. Like this:

If the leak is found early enough the seals might not be damaged yet. Hopefully I was in time.[/img] Roel

Good tip, but why not have it fixed with a new seal ? "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Easy, the seal might not be damaged yet and mine is out off waranty.
You can put in a new seal but as long as the breather stays blocked, it will start leaking again.
This fix cost me 5.12 Euro. I probably never see a LR bill that cheap again. Roel

so would it not be prudent for LR to have a filter put on during build?
and for those that dont have filter to put one on asap, saving a lot of mess and possible future bills!
No matter how bad you are,you are not totally useless...you can always be used as a bad example

Update:
I was to late already and the diff is still leaking. It looks like it's leaking a lot less but it's still not dry. So a new seal has to be put in.
Just a warning: It is 6 to 8 hours work. 15 euro for the seal but a lot more for the hours. Roel

I don't think so but will check. When the top was cut off it was clearly blocked. Roel

Hi Roel,
I was just told that both front and rear diffs are leaking oil.
Did you cut off blocked part of breather pipe and then put on a filter (is this a fuel filter?) or did you replace a whole breather pipe.
Is it possible that the same applies to rear diff?.
In South Africa instead of repairs LR workshop told me to replace both diffs as they do not repair them ?!, lots of money as I am out ot warranty.
Thanks
Jack

Strange that, LRSA were supplying reconditioned diffs under warranty accordinto previous posts.
I am sure you could get them reconditioned. "A society that will trade a little liberty for a little order will lose both- and deserve neither"

When I had a leak from my transfer box, the seals were replaced under warranty - they would rather pay for a couple of gaskets and a bit of oil and labour than a new box or diff in your case Mark.

There have been issues with the diffs with contamination causing the seals to fail. Should be replaced under warranty but some were saying they were putting in recoditioned ones in in SA. "A society that will trade a little liberty for a little order will lose both- and deserve neither"
