Well that's the XC90 off the short list to replace SWMBO's car when it' time comes! Not much good up here as we get a fair amount of snow.

I'll have to admit to being favourably impressed by the XC90 over the past few days. It reminds of a Freelander; lighter than the D3, different AWD system but it's got me up frozen farm tracks and not got stopped yet.

Let's not be too disparaging about the 4x4 capabilities of the XC90. Here's a vid showing it tackling a moderate snow climb and having a go on a slope covered in sheet ice and snow.

TBH any 4x4 with a driver who knows what they are doing will be good in snow, if it has traction control too then most are highly capable on snowy roads.
As usual it is often driver inexperience that lets thing down (not mentioning my neighbour who could not drive his Freelander 1 up a moderate hill last night, closely followed by another neighbour in a 2wd Alfa 156 who sailed straight up )2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

has to be said that my friend had only just got the volvo, and has never driven off road or indeed a four wheel drive, but I have to slag him off as he tested the D3 and said that the volvo was better the picture doesn't lie Welcome to the Global Warming Corner.

I am thinking of swapping the wifes A5 for an XC 90, the A5 seems to bring out the green eyed monster in everyone and the wife, although she loves driving it, has decided she is fed up with boy racers overtaking her and then slowing down, etc etc.
I like the look of the XC90 and although it seems a bit overkill to have 2 x 7 seat 4wds on the drive, at £25k it is a cheap car and should be good for a few years, one of my neighbours has an 03 one and it is still going strong.
The youtube video shows how good winter tyres are! I am a firm advocate of winter tyres, the difference is unreal. Was overtaken by one on the Autobahn this morning, I was doing 115 ish, and it flew past me, may have been a petrol one though!
Now, can someone point me in the direction of where they are selling XC90's for £25k please?

Incredibly good prices, I have to say Donny. I wince to think we paid top dollar for ours five years ago. That's a lot of car for the money, I assure you.
That said, I'm not missing having to shoehorn three large children plus luggage into an XC90 for a 12 hour trip to France on Sunday. I've added a decent Kamai roof box to the D3 for this trip (thanks to Chris for the roof bars ) so we'll have the luxury of even more space this time...
