I'm inclined to agree. I was followed yesterday by an S type Jag in a colour very similar to the Rimini Red. It had some chrome accents that complemented the colour very nicely. Oh no, I'm standing at the top of another blingy slippery slope. Deja vu - here's a pic of the engine bay of my Mazda...

From looking at the fitting instructions for the side strips it looks like a fairly straight forward job to do - just stick them in the right place and then heat them up a bit for maximum adhesion.
However I have a couple of questions:
My paintwork has had Supaguard applied - can I just stick on top of this or should it taken back to just the paint?
How important is the heating to over 30 degrees bit? I'd have to use a hairdryer to do this and I just think I'll look stupid outside the house giving the car a blow-dry!!!
Thanks,Si

With the strips you get a few alcohol wipes. These clean the paintwork before sticking them on. Your paint protection will be fine – a smoother finish will be better.
I laid the strips on the radiators in the house for an hour. This heats them up well and makes them pliable so they follow the contours of the metal work. I used a hair dryer on the metal work for 10-15 mins before sticking each one. I just turned the car around each time, so my neighbours couldn’t see what I was up to.Matt

Parking facing the sun also helps.

I've just ordered a set of strips from Nick at Yeovil. Went for plain black in the end, as they were £15 cheaper after discount. Picked up a towbar electrics kit whilst I was at it.

So if I put them on my Rimini red D3, should I go chrome strip or plain?

Contours! What contours? My doors are as flat and plain as a piece of metal can get!!Si

If your D3 is silver do NOT put rubbing strips on! It makes them look rubbish. Really.
There's a very good reason the LR designers/stylists left the strips off the D3. It's to shorten the perception of length of the car between front and rear wheels. If you put big black lines down the doors it throws the car's carefully designed propertions out completely. Suddenly the car looks too long.
I'll calm down now.
I didn't realise I was so passionate about this minor issue. Sorry.

Yer having a laugh Rob. Design?? The only real design I have witnessed is the use of the clean and dirty side. ie, air intake and filler cap on one side, the other left 'clean'
The outside of the car has been no more designed than dare I say it the fabled Transit connect on steroids. Add to that dark windows and there you go.
It's an ugly, but purposeful utilitarian vehicle, which I suppose is why I bought it.

I am of the opinion that side protection strips does provide some protection against dents caused by careless parkers and supermarket shoppers. However, they generally only protect against damage from front door opening, rear doors are differently profiled and will contact above the level of the protection strip. However, fitting side steps and leaving the D3 at off-road height when parked can really help. This increases the height of the side protection strips and doors will generally contact the step rather than the door panel.*Disco3 7-seat Auto

Finally got around to fitting my plain side strips yesterday. Glad I've fitted them, as although I agree that they detract from the purity and simplicity of the D3 design, I also think they look good because the bisecting of the door panels makes the whole car look less tall, and gives an impression of shrinking the whole car somehow. If they reduce the risk of car park knocks, that's also a bonus.

Bump strips
The doors are just asking for a dent in them so its a must for me.Managed to pick up a set for £38
But have yet to fit ! although it doesnt look a problemjust measure up and stick em on
I think Landrover should fit them as standard to protect the door skins
While I agree that Door Protection is a good idea, and could look pretty, I find myself pondering adding more complexity to a very elegant design.
By this I mean that the bumpers are a textured grey, wing mirrors are textured black, window surrounds and door handles are flat black and the air intake is metallic grey.
Add to this that is another line on the body, which does not match any other (front bumpers, are at different heights is what I am getting at), where in previous Disco incarnations it matched a body line.
I want them, I just can't bring myself to do it. Dave
