L/R are not the only manufacture with this problem so Citeon and Peugeot. And as I was reminded the other day Peugeot along with Jaguar developed the TDV6. Does anyone know if Jags are having the same problem ???
I have a 2006 Jaguar XJ 2.7 diesel.
This summer I suffered from a whining noise behind the dash, followed by brake servo assistance failure.
The failure was intermittent.
Yesterday I identified that the grommet where the vacuum pipe connects into the brake servo had split and was soaked in black engine oil.
I notice that both Landrover and Citroen have issued safely recalls concerning cars that have the exact same vacuum pump as my Jag, but that Jaguar have not, neither for the XJ nor the S-Type.
If anyone has any advice then I would welcome hearing it.
Specifically I think that Jaguar should also be forced to do this recall work, but I am wondering whether this is best escalated via Trading Standards, VOSA, Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, or Jaguar Enthusiasts Club.
Who is most likely to listen and do something?

I forgot to ask the other thing that I would like to know.
Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a vacuum pump that has the design fault and one that doesn't.
I think that:-
On a Jaguar XJ 2006 the pump has 4R8Q-2A451-AE on it.
On a Jaguar XF 2009 the pump has 4R8Q-2A451-AF on it.
Does this reflect the change on a Landrover?
Is AE the bad part and AF the good part?
thanks, DNJ

The LR recall effects cars upto 2009, so this matches the Jag P/No change.
On the LR they change a spring, ball and washer in the vacume pump (while still fitted to the car) and fit 2 pipes coming out of the pump rather than the existing 1.
How many pipes on the jag ?

The vacuum pump on the back of the engine has two outlets.
One goes straight to the brake servo, there are no T pieces or joints, or check valves or anything.
The other goes to an actuator on the engine.
It sounds as though I don't need a new pump then, I just need the new ball and spring from an LR dealer and fit it to my existing 2006 vacuum pump?

There have been lots of failures of servos on S type diesels, but I am told that the failure mode is water dripping on the servo and corroding it out.
I think that I am the first to see this on an XJ. With mine it was the grommet that rotted out rather than the servo itself.
There are far more Disco 3s on the road than XJs and S-Types, and almost all Disco 3s are diesels, whereas the proportion of Jags with a diesel engine is much lower.
However if you do happen to be one of the few Jag 2.7 diesel owners then you as an individual I think have the same pump with the same dodgy return valve and run the same risk, so I personally think that Jaguar should recall it just as Landrover and Citroen did.

The pipe that goes from the pump to the servo on an XJ is no longer available, however yesterday a spare one from a breakers arrived in the post.
The pipe appears to have a non return valve built into one of the end fittings (I think the fitting that pushes into the servo) because you can blow through it in on direction but not the other.
Was the original Disco pipe the same? Could this be why the Disco needed a recall and maybe not the Jag?
Edit: I pulled off the old pipe and it was totally full of oil. I have bagged it up as evidence and I am going to raise it with VOSA/VSA.

Hi guys I’m looking for a bit of advice on this topic I recently took my fathers discovery 3 to a local Indy garage to get it checked over and was hit with a job list worth nearly 4K, as you can imagine that’s a lot of money for anyone to fork out in one go, anyway one of the faults they found was that the vacuum pump was leaking oil and would need replacing at the cost of £620 plus vat, my question is when searching the internet I’ve stumbled up on this thread and was wondering would my fathers vehicle be covered under a recall for this fault ie would they replace the vacuum pump/does it need replacing ? Or would they do the modifications as has been discussed earlier in this thread, and would that fix the problem I’m at a loss of what to do and was hoping you guys could give me some advice and point me I’m the right direction, the model year is 2009 plate and I would appreciate any help I could get.

De-Tango
V8 Brakes
EGRs blanked
Running boards
3 flash indicators and clock on dash
Blingy grille...

So I’ve just looked at the pipe this morning it look like this
So where do you guys think I stand, is there any other reason I’d be getting oil in the vacuum pump and making it leak and also is it down to the recall ?
