So would I BN, I was told this on my LRE day! I did a couple of minutes digging on Google and it does seem that airbags do cause many deaths. They deploy at too low a speed in most cars 6-12 mph and inflate in the wrong way. I notice also a DS3 airbag is for sale on ebay Shocked Maybe he read the book too Razz

The industry standard for air bag deployment is 15.6 mph. This is to avoid the activations in Supermarket car parks for example. The D3 has a sensor that when you are off roading knows (somehow) and will not deploy as a normal crash situation. 6mph is way below and not within the requirements. I think the LRE guy may have his facts slightly incorrect.

Try this it has some data. They say with seat belts it is 16mph, but that is the USA, ours are 15.6 mph which in conversion, is about the same.

Take a look at the link I posted. A quote:

Quote:
Since 1990, 256 deaths reportedly have been caused by airbags inflating in low severity crashes, most of them in older model vehicles. These deaths include 86 drivers, 12 adult passengers, 135 children, and 23 infants.

Hi Simon

I charge £80.00 including vat per car, (four tyres) but as it’s a franchised network, prices may differ slightly depending on your location. We don’t seal the spare because you obviously shouldn’t need it but also the vehicle needs to be driven a couple of miles within a couple of hours of installation to ensure the sealant is distributed evenly around the inside of the tyre. Your nearest installer is Kevin at Superseal Cymru (mid Wales) on 07980 567097 or email [email protected].

Thanks. Brian

Oops, sorry Simon.

Ducati, that was one of the statistics, I think it was that site that I was explaining about low speed impacts (not the LRE guy) I think it goes on to say BMW and others feel that they shouldn't work below18 mph. Further still it covers how airbags are developing, it made very interesting reading

Hmm. And still no NCAP rating for the Disco3. Does anyone know if it's just a matter of their big workload, or is there another reason for this wait?

I take it this is in the USA?
I also understand that the airbags in the US are larger as you do not where seat belts!

In the UK children & certainly not infants are aloud in the front seat!

I have had a head on collision with a 4X4, it came across the central reservation & we ended hitting his rear wheel arch!
Combined seed of 60 to 70mph, we where in my wifes 2 week old reno scenic, I walked away as had a air bag!
The wife did not & broke her shoulder very bad cuts & bruises, kept in hospital over night as they thought she had a ruptured spleen! To this day she suffers from 7 years on!
The seat belts saved our lives, the air bag meant I walked away with cuts & bruising!
Also thinking being in a big 4X4 is safe, well we pushed the rear end axle 2' out the other side, luckily no one was sitting in the back seat!
The front of the SCENIC did it job & crumpled to nothing to take the impact with the cabin staying intact!
Air bag sir yes please would not be with out them!

To draw your own conclusions about whether a 4x4 is safe for the occupants, take a look at this story. It is a friend of mine who lives in Ireland, and they walked away with minor injuries. This car did not have airbags! It did a cart wheel over a bridge parapet into a field - And they walked away!

Bloody Hell Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Yes kids aren't supposed to but they do! I wouldn't be without my airbags, but it is always good to know the ins and outs pros and cons. Just because a report is from the US doesn't mean its wrong. Wink

I like the fact that you can disable the passenger airbag if you have to carry a child in the front.

Not that I want to get in to a debate about this but!
You could ask would a car with road tyres have got its self in this mess? Would it have left the road?
Also the best/ safest way to crash a car is to roll it (I have been in 2 rolled cars & walked away!)
It is head on or side on impacts that do the damage!
MY accident was head on we say slowed to 50 mph & say he was going 30 mph when thats like hitting a brick wall at 80 mph & it hurts!

Nick: Those statistics are indeed from the US. We don't have larger airbags than you, but they did used to inflate at a higher rate due to being designed for folks who DON'T wear their safety belts. I believe every state has mandated seatbelt use, and we now have dual-stage airbags that deploy at the same rate as yours if you do have your seatbelt on (thank goodness! IMO screw the idiots that don't wear their safety belts!!!).

However, I am not sure why you think it's safest to roll... Rollovers cause more deaths per accident than other types... Here's a quote from an article in Motor Trend, citing NHTSA statistics (US):

Quote:
Rollovers accounted for more than 10,000 fatalities in the USA in 1999. That's more than side and rear crashes combined.

Gareth: that's one messed-up Disco! Wow. Glad they were OK. Where did that woman buy her striped wellies? My wife would love those!!!

Again in 1999 how many people had there seat belts on in the USA?
A car that rolls takes much less impact than one in a collision!
