Wiper knocking noise at return point |
|
Getting driven mad by a knocking/clunk coming from my wipers at the sweep return point(drivers side). Been and done the clean window and rainex, bosch wiper blades fitted less than 1500 miles ago and it didnt make any difference either. Any clues out there?

You can try 'twisting' the blade, the idea being the blade changes direction bit at a time rather than all at one which is what causes the 'clunk'.

mine has just started doing this - blades only 3km and swapped them round, made no difference. Does the twisting work? d4 HSE

Sounds more like the nut has worked loose on the wiper arm and needs adjusting on the spines then tightening up - has happened to me before on D3 and D4 plus I've fixed it on 2 other D3s for others.

yep Mr H - got it in one! I had worked it out after my post, but by standing and listening. Thing is I don't see any spines, it just seemed to be able to move on the spigot. I have now simply tightened the nut up in the correct place and it seems fixed. Is there no grooves to keep it in place?
(TBH, there was a time skiing at Xmas that it was snowing so hard, by the time I had scraped the whole screen to turn the wipers on, there was quite a bit to shift and i suspect that did the damage ) d4 HSE

You've probably worn of the splines/ridges on the softer metal (Ali) of the arm if it's been loose for a while and may need to get a new wiper arm if tighten it doesn't keep it in place, but the ones on the wiper mechanism are of harder metal so they should be ok.

Mine did that and I mentioned it to the dealer when I had my last service, from the 'Blackview' it seemed that they took off some kind of plastic shield and fiddled, could have been with my nuts, then tested it squirting water, then put it all back Fine now

Left mine in rain sensor mode a few weeks ago - had an early start on a frosty morning started up to defrost and drivers side freed itself but passenger was welded to screen - oh sugar. Manually freed off passenger side and continued on journey but on return trip later passenger side got out of sync and started slapping lower screen and beyond. I was surprised by how loose the nut was - a quick straighten and tighten and good to go.

drip a little threadlock or similar into the nut and wiper spline so that the nut stays tight (not too much tho or you will lock the whole mechanism up)
its a common problem particularly in winter when the ice gives more resistance to the wiper blade
dont leave auto wipers in the on position in winter!!!!!!!! ....................................................................................................
