Hello,
Please can someone recommend a hand winch for recovery? (Appreciate it would take ages, but can't justify a mounted one).
Also, are land anchors any good for sand? Are there dual purpose ones for mud?

Tirfor style winches are very good and will keep you fit, also you can winch yourself fowrard or backwards - ususally easier to go back the way you came than forward.
However to haul a D3 around at 2.7 tons plus whatever load you have in it is going to be hard work.
Also a ground anchor will need to be suitably robust, the self digging ones will need 2 people in most cases one to make it dig in and one to winch, unles you dig a hole and bury it to start it! With a ground anchor attach a rope to the tail of it - as you will need to pull or dig it out. For sand bigger is better. The pin type anchor is going to be an easier one man job, but needs firm ground.
Idealy winching off a solid object is the way to go.

Ground anchors comes in many versions from the foldable Pullpal/PRT type to the solid X Eng type to the stake and pin type. None are suitable for all ground types. I have seen the welds on home made anchors fail so make sure you get a good anchor.
Sand can be awkward to get a good anchor in. One solution is to bury a spare tyre in the sand which can involve a lot of digging. The tri fold shovel is too small for effectively digging a deep hole. There take a decent sized shovel.
Using a snatch block/pulley and double lining will reduce the energy required per stroke from the manual operator but double the length of rope to take in.
