Build yourself a Custom Storage Drawer unit.
Hi all,
I've just finished my project of a custom storage drawer unit for the back of my D3.
This would also fit a D4 or with modified dimensions any other 4x4.
I am a tradesman but with tooling most fairly confident home handymen ( or Handywomen! ) could construct something similar.
Completed Drawer unit:
How the unit is held down:

Open drawers:
Complete with top frame and tent shelf, full extension fridge slide:
I'll post dimensions and instructions if others are interested.
I was sick of going camping unorganized!
Rich.

Please post the dimensions and instructions. With a dog cage in the back of mine, there's little room for anything else. This drawer system would be great.

In case you are wondering how I lower the spare tire:
The holes in the base are for 3 reasons:
1- It helps stop the air lock that can happen if the box is completely sealed.
2- Shallow items can be stored there if the seats are left in like mine, or access to even more storage if the seats under have been removed.
3- It makes the unit lighter.
The centre division is offset 20mm to the drivers side and a socket and extension are fitted to the spare wheel winch bolt. The edge of the winch hole has been sealed so the dust cap is left off:
My water supply straped in with a hose that runs to the back of the car:

I'll post more detailed info once I have compiled it.
For the runners / slides for the drawers there are many options.
1 - Commercial runners / yes they are good but you loose too much space in the width of the drawers.
2 - Use teflon / polywhatever as slides
3 - Use laminate as slides as I have / minimal thickness, slides well enough. I did this on both the bottom and top of the unit to assist easy movement.
The overall size of the drawer unit is 1000mm wide x 1025mm deep, the sides, divider and drawer fronts and backs are 189 x 19mm pine with 12mm plywood used for the top, bottom, drawer sides and bottom. The unit is on wedges 40mm at the front of the unit and 20mm at the back.
