I've not noticed any difference in smells with mine.

Allisport put on a replacement pipe when they put the new IC on.

How much oof a nightmare is it to get to the bolts at the front of the Cat to remove it?

I have a mate who owns an exhaust company so could get a decat pipe made really cheap!

Hi it states that On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic converter.
So the only vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test is a petrol engine vehicle and the equipment used to test it is looking for hydrocarbons (HC) Carbon monoxide (CO) and a lambda reading, and on a diesel engine it is only a smoke test not a full cat emissions test and uses a different machine so During this test, a calibrated smoke meter is used to assess the density of the smoke from compression ignition(diesel) engined vehicles.

Let's hope you are right Thumbs Up

Just to report back.
I had the catalytic converter removed yesterday. The job took one hour fifteen minutes, and cost the equivalent of 50 pounds. . Maybe a bit steep, but well done. The biggest part of the job was to break out the cat from the exhaust box.
The cat was not in bad nick around the edges (against the walls of the box), but the middle did have quite a bit of rubbish which had accumulated.

I can detect no difference in sound from the exhaust. It seems much the same to me, but this may increase at higher speeds, which I have not yet done.
When driving in the Disco I can hear zero difference in the engine sound either. Still very quite.
There is a slight increase in the fumes, but not excessively so.

There is a significant difference in the throttle response, which I hope may also result in a slightly better fuel consumption, but I will test this properly on our trip to KNP next week. The car appears to be slightly smoother but this may be because I'm looking for positives.
Where I noticed the throttle response most was when overtaking or increasing speed once the car is doing say 50-60 kms per hour. The response is not as noticeable at lower speeds, but it is there for sure - I'm not imagining it!

I've been thinking about a decat for mine for a while, based on previous experience with my Td5 Defender which went sooo much better with the centre silencer replaced by a straight-through pipe, the exhaust gas is much more free flowing allowing the turbo to respond far quicker, so I figured the cat will have the same effect.

On the MOT point, can you actually see the cat without removing the under shield?
If not, how would they know since the testers are not allowed to remove fixed covers as part of the test?

There's no test for it on a diesel and if it can't be seen (or seen as missing) without removing covers, then it shouldn't be a problem.

However anyone concerned about it being spotted as missing could always remove it and knock the guts out of it with a big bar, (it's just a big lump of ceramic honeycomb in the middle,) then put the empty pipe back in. Thumbs Up

I have put a Alive decat pipe.

It now smells different, better sound (due of stainless steel) and I think better torque for the engine.

I can't go back now Thumbs Up

This is from the new mot manual so stop your worrying Thumbs Up

Quote:
The M.O.T. Inspection ManualIssue Date 01 January 2012 7.1Exhaust System Information Method of Inspection Reason for Rejection The overall security of the exhaust system should be assessed;

one or more exhaust mountings missing may not be a Reason for Rejection.

A durable repair to an exhaust system which effectively prevents leaks is acceptable providing the system is structurally sound.
A minor exhaust leak from, for example, a connection joint or a pin hole, is not a Reason for Rejection.

3. On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic converter.

And the only vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test is a petrol vehicle ,diesel vehicles only have a smoke density test.

Hope this clears up some scaremongering Whistle
