GS or XS?

Hi Guys,

I'm curreently keeping my eye open for a 4 to 5 year old disco 3 at the minute with low ish mileage. The burning question is, do I go with the more affordable and more common GS, or is the XS worth stretching the budget for?

Thanks chaps for any response.

I'd go for the one with the best service history, regardless of model.
Man with no D3 anymore, but cant leave the forum....how sad.

Whilst I agree with the above statement, I would go for the XS.

Several reasons

Better audio system with buttons on steering wheel, cruise control, bright pack, (front fog lights, puddle lamps, auto dimming mirror), heated seats, and, depending on which MY you go for, leather interior & sat nav.

I had a GS as a courtesy car whilst my old XS was being serviced. It really did feel very basic inside compared to the XS.

Oh, and get an auto. Much better driving experience IMHO. Thumbs Up

XS, especially if it's got leather & satnav.

Agree on sentiment of best car for best money, irrelevant of spec.

I had XS and have to say couldn't live in any car without cruise control and can't believe that all Disco's didn't have this feature. Heated seats, remote stereo and front fogs all nice to have but not life-changing Laughing

I would also support auto over manual every time as personal preference.

As stated not all XS's have leather or sat nav. Would prefer no sat-nav as you just can't beat an 80 quid Tom-Tom (other brands are available..... Smile ) and the cubby hole is useful for usual day-to-day detritus we all chuck in the car

Buying 2nd hand it has to be 'bang-for-buck' everytime with relation to mileage/history/condition (I once ended up with a turd brown Maestro 1.3 with four speed gearbox when looking for a 1.6 five-speed in any colour except brown.... Whistle )

i guess if we all wrote our piority list it would be different for me never use cruise but wouldnt be without heated leather seats .

thats the beauty with the disco it fits so many different people and lifestyles so therefore lots of different needs

personnaly id go for the most toys every time its the extras that make the car feel special to you
once i bought low spec newer models but got quickly bored with basic feel .

i get annoyed now if anything i drive hasnt got auto lights !! how bloody lazy is that Thumbs Up

Wow,

Thanks for the input guys, I did forget to mention I was looking for an auto also as I suffer from siatica fairly often. I'm in my truck from 7 in a morning till 10 at night almost 7 days a week, I almost live in my current L200, it makes sense to be comfy with all the time I spend in it and the mileage I do. Just didn't want to pass a decent GS if the XS weren't that much better. But it looks like they are a kick above the GS, and most of you that already have them, prefer the XS if given a choice.

When I first started looking I had to whittle the list down from disco, shogun, touareg, Jeep grand cherokee and kia sorrento. I finally got down to just the disco in GS or XS form in the end. So now just got to find a decent one!

I used to be a specification whore myself, had to have the top of the range but more recently I analysed a few things about usage, usefulness etc. Turns out I don't need auto wipers, auto headlights, heated & cooled leather seats blah blah. And more to the point, I do need something I don't have in the FFRR, 7 seats.

So now looking at another Disco, D3 or D4, not sure on spec but I am sure I want one which has been well cared for. Unless buying new I think finding one which has FSH with clear evidence it hasn't been abused has to be top priority for me. I'd rather have a working & reliable van than a useless garage ornament that spends it's life on the ramp. After all, all those toys are only any use when you're actually driving the thing.

Good luck in the search.

Thanks for that Choppa60, I've had a look at yours since your post, and it is indeed a very good spec, I would love to make you an offer but I'm affraid its just a touch out of my scope as I'm looking at 07's or lower spec 08's and I wouldn't be able to make you a reasonable enough offer. Its a shame you have to sell it really

Don't forget you can very easily add Cruise Control to any GS spec model, for less than £100, just the switch pack and system activation (which a few on here can do). You can also add a better stereo (non LR) easily enough + Xenon's, bumper mount fog lights etc. Only things tricky to retro fit are heated seats and auto lights/wipers but still not impossible.
