I havn't had it done, but as I understand it, it has to be reachable / operatable from the drivers seat which could mean it can be put in the upper passenger side glovebox which has to make for a tidier installation.
Hope that helps.

Mate I work with is going through the same thing at the mo.
We've come up with a bracket over the centre speaker to hold the tacho head just above the centre console.
It's in the amber area of the VOSA layout but is in sight and reach of the driver and does not affect the view of the road ahead so fingers crossed, we'll get a decision out of them in the next feel or so.
Removing the upholders was an option put forward but they are in regular use!
As soon as we get a reply from VOSA, I'll post it on here.

That's the guide we've been going by......
Hopefully someone will soon sign it off to say it's ok to install.
Then again, this is VOSA we're dealing with!A common mistake made when trying to come up with a totally foolproof design is to completely underestimate the innate ingenuity of fools.

Just a quick update.
Siting of the Tachograph head in the roof has been agreed with VOSA and should be ready for collection later today.
A housing has been developed replacing the interior lights, mic, etc, resiting them below the tachograph head and will appear to be a factory fit design we are informed.
Once collected, I'll post some pics - anyone interested in a tacho housing, let me know.

Hi Guys,
Would appreciate some updates / photos as to the positioning of the tacho in a D4. Was the headlining location the final decision?
Guess if the vehicle has satnav then this is the last resort?
Also what about the tacho surround, is that a Land Rover option or should the tacho installer provide this?
Thanks

A lot of lorries have them above the driver's head and also coaches, so that would be an ok place in your D4 too. It's ok VOSA (Oh I soooo hate that name) saying towing a trailer for business use requires the use of a tachograph but they don't have the hassle or expense of fitting the thing!
It's amazing how many people are towing a trailer for business use that do not have a tachograph fitted! You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

Thanks Blue200tdi.
You are so right about others not having a tacho when towing for commercial purposes.
We have a tacho in our current D3 commercial and have been stopped about three times for random safety checks. Every time they have asked if the journey is for commercial purposes and if a tacho is fitted.
It annoys me that some of the Land Rover dealers (and some pickup dealers) are still naive to tachograph legislation by stating: "you do not need one."
I guess these salesman are just after a sale but you would think a bit of advice would go a long way for repeated business, afterall the Land Rover dealers are all boasting about 3,500kg towing limits.
I appreciate that the legislation is constantly updated but you would think they'd be interested to at least acknowledge that a tacho might have to be installed!
Why do they not work closer with local tacho installers?
A tacho installer has quoted £1,800 + vat for the digitial tacho and installation in the headlining or £1,500 + vat mounted in place of satnav or near transmission tunnel
Comments appreciated.
