Hi all, I've been searching for a thread like this for months.
When swapping out halogens units for xenon units, do they just plug and play? I have read all sorts about flickering even with OEM units.
Could a numpty like me fit new headlamp units?

Hi,
Most certainly you can, no problem- only 2 pins pull upwards be a little careful.
Unplug the connector at the back be steady when pulling, and then refit reverse order.
easy peasy.

Ah sorry, when I say unit I mean the entire headlamp rather than just the bulb.
I understood that there is a ballast? Built into the xenon unit that is required.
I had assumed that you cannot just swap bulbs.

Defiantly will be easier to buy new headlights!!!!! and then get configured.
Changing the inner of lamps looks a nightmare.
You maybe able to fit hid kit not sure on that one!!!!!

It is easy to physically swap halogen to xenon headlamp units, as said remove grill then two sliders on top of each lamp come upwards (can be very stiff first time), gently pull whole lamp forwards with a bit of jiggling and remove connector from rear and that's it the whole lamp is removed.
But your profile says you have a D4 so you wont have a flickering issue, they simply wont work at all until they are enabled using suitable diagnostic equipment.

Can you give me a steer on suitable diagnostic equipment and cost? The dealer has said they can't do anything so what could I use?
I've googled as hard as I know how and can't find much.

Most on the forum are using either the IID tool or Nanocom Evo. Both can do so much more than just enable xenons. Loads of info on both if you use the forum search.

Munders, yes the one in the picture was the correct bulb.
Replaced with Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited, which is a much better match and like daylight when full beams are on Justin

mrnicklight, if you can't find someone to activate in your area, you could try an independent who will have the right gear. Unless you are activating multiple items and reading codes, it won't pay you to own the kit... Justin

Two more questions then, can you put AFS cornering headlights in a D4 that hasn't had them before?
How would I go about finding an individual close to me with gear who I could pay to update my software?
