Tailgate wont release fully
Hi all,
This is my first post, I've been lurking around the site for a while but never posted before, and i just want to say that this is an excellent site with plenty of usefull information.
OK now to my question.
I remeber reading that if you press the unlock and lock on the centre console at the same time, the tailgate releases.
My Tailgate does release, but it seems to be still latched on somewhere. I cant get it to fully open. Just wondering if this is how its supposed to be , or do i have a problem.
So Far the cars been great. 45000kms done and not one major problem. Just had a couple of warnings show up on the dash that were cleared by a simple "reboot".

The release you refer only does what pressing the upper tailgate button does. Pressing the dash buttons will release the locking mechanism, but you actually have to be pulling the tailgate at the same time (or pushing it from inside - which is what the button function is for) to actually lift the upper tailgate.

Cyclic, it will only confuse you! Save it for when you really need it, like side of road in pouring road with crys of "how does this damn thing work???". Besides if U are like me, you'll read it and have forgotten before the next page is turned!

Thanks for the replies.
But i think i may have not explained myself clearly. The thing is when i press both the unlock and lock together, i can hear the tailgate unlock. But then when i try to push it open, it wont. It moves a bit but it still seems to be latched somewhere.
If im not mistaken, Winger, i believe that u mean that i should be pushing the tailgate open, while at the same time pressing the unlock/lock on the centre console.
Its kind of pointless if you have to be pushing it open at the same time, because then it becoms a two man job (one to press the buttons, one to push the tailgate).
I should really go try this tonight. Gonna have to enlist the help of someone else though .

Something needs to pull the tailgate as you press the buttons. I used to wedge a bit of packing foam stuff into it after the first press of the buttons, and then press them again, to get it open when my rear switch failed.IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

so how exactly would you use the emergency release if you're alone? Ive never tried it but assumed it would be for those occasions when your stalled in deep water and need to get out somehow...didnt realise i'd need to be 8 foot tall so I could press the buttons with my feet whilst puhing the rear doors 2004 TDV6 HSE Auto Zambezi Silver
At last!!! I've now found a use for my cross-over roof bars
Remove a roof bar, sit in drivers seat, push both console buttons and use roof bar to push the tailgate open

It isn't there to let the presser of the buttons out.............
However, you can use the double-button press to programme your key fob Land Rover button to do the same thing........then you can crawl into the back, press said button, pushing the upper section of the tailgate at the same time and make a stylish exit.

useful in an emergency then, nose down in the more with the tailgate your only exit

had similar problem, went back to the dealer and they sorted it out in few minutes. just needs a bit of adjustment at the lock latch

Might be a better "mud emergency" (or oops, this puddle is really a lake & I'm stuck) exit than the sunroof. Once my mother turned a Merc on its side after hitting black ice, she climbed out the sunroof. There is no way she could do that with the D3 sunroof & she is really skinny!

You place too much emphasis on the word "emergency". It is an "emergency" tailgate release, in case the upper tailgate release switch doesn't work (or you want to let someone in the back out, or someone on the outside in, whilst remaining in the comfort of your seat.
I just tried it om my 2-day old D3 (I never get tired of saying this ), and it depends on the order of pushing those buttons: if I press 'unlock' slightly earlier before the 'lock' button, all the doors will lock first and then after some delay you can hear the tailgate unlock. But in that state it cannot be opened because it still latches onto something. If I press the 'unlock' dash button one more time, or 'lock' first and then 'unlock', I can open the tailgate. You can still feel that the latch is not completely free, but a gentle pull makes it give way.
I will ask my dealer if they can make adjustments to make this work properly, because I would like to have the 'emergency escape'. 2006 Zermatt Silver TDV6 'SE' Auto, Mantec sump guard, Frontrunner roofrack, Lightforce 140s, split charge system and... a Jetboil.
