Desert Perfromance - Bung and el-cheapo Air Jack

Guys, just thought I would report back on the Taiwan made Air-jack bought locally for the equivalent of 23 quid. NoDo$h tells me it is the same as the Draper offering, just without the Draper logos on it. Certainly on Amazon, there are varying reports about it.
My run through the Omani Wahiba sands in early December 07 was fantastic, with varying terrain from firm packed sand to crossing dunes well over 100 metres on soft, soft powdery sand, constantly wind-blown and changing. At the overnight camp we gave the airjack and bung a trial in really soft sand. The car was at a side angle of around 10 degrees, and we jacked up the downslope side (worst circumstances).
The bung worked just beautifully, and the air-jack was placed to the rear of centre, beneath the chassis rail. We raised the entire side of the car to the point where the rear wheel was just clear of the sand, and the front wheel clear even with the suspension in extended mode. Regret this was all done by torch light and the pictures didn't come out too well.
Repositioning the jack further forward or to the rear to suit the wheel needing changing would have slightly improved things I think. A swift scrape to clear the sand beneath the wheel with a spade would have made it perfectly possible to change the wheel, even in the circumstances we created.
So once again, a fantastic buy on the bung NoDo$h 'Thumbs Up', and I can recommend the air-jack for all but the most extreme conditions out here.

Shocked ooops! Just spotted 3 bods have added their names to this since the last post. Will need to order up some more stock so before I do, anyone else want one?

ND - bit out of touch on this

Did you ever get the bung for the inflation side exhaust pipe to work? If so are these for sale?

Hi Alex

Not to a level I'd be happy selling, no.

1) The tubing of the modifed bung I've used, while only slightly narrower than the hose bore, is too tight/restrictive and stalls the engine (pressure/flow reduction is exponential to the reduction in cross-section)

2) Once mastered, using the Takla hose connector and being able to remove it the moment you think the car is at the right height is safer, quicker and better for the car than relying on switching the engine off at the precise moment you need.

The best solution seems to be a decent bung for one tailpipe and the takla connector for the hose. Or if you have money to burn, a pressure-switched onboard compressor with an always-charged 25l x 150PSI tank able to shift air at a high enough rate. Say £400 installed? 8)

Apologies to all those who have been waiting a while for these; I should have the next batch made up within 7 days.

Unfortunately there has been a small price increase from my supplier for the main part, so the price of the bungs has risen by £1 and will now be £16.50 + p&p, not £15.50 as previously.

I'll send a pm to everyone who has expressed an interest to check they are still interested and sort out delivery Thumbs Up

Shocked Who's got a 3 1/2" pipe?

It will go to 2.5" without a problem. If anyone has a larger tail pipe let me know and I'll make something suitable, although the price for the bung and shipping will be higher I'm afraid, as the plug suitable for a 3.5" exhaust costs more and weighs nearly double the standard bung.
