Type approved NAS spec receiver.
Hello,
Does anyone know if the very smart bit of kit shown here (I'm guessing it's a NAS spec receiver) is type approved for the UK?

who is going to stop you the average boby would not have a clue all so they would have to prove that it is not fit for purpose you would not drive round with-it on unless you where towing something any way would you.Home of RLD Hidden winch mounts Spare wheel Locks Trailer Body Fabrication ray@rld-tech.co.uk D3/4 sump plates MY 14 sump plates and the Discovery Sport wheel protectors Discovery 5 wheel locks

Thanks - that's useful - love that tow pack! There were new regulations covering tow packs fitted to cars - they had to be type approved, otherwise they would be illegal. It's a total PITA - though I do see that it makes sense from a safety point of view.
So, going back a while, for example, if your D2 didn't come with the 2" receiver and removable drop plate (as I think all UK ones didn't - but there's an argument to be had over the G4 cars) and you fitted anything other than the Genuine LR one it wouldn't be legal. This meant it was impossible to get a variable height removable tow pack...really annoying. Things may have changed now though.
The reason it must be type approved is because if it isn't and your tow pack fails/breaks/cracks or you have have any sort of accident, then the D3 and whatever you're towing probably won't be covered by your insurance. Insurance companies will look for any sort of get-out.
D3 + trailer + boat - insurance = big bill

Thanks - yes agree it's totally annoying - and definitely looks like that one won't fail! It's totally frustrating all the Eu regs stuff.
However, I do a lot of work with a couple of charities and have to tow a number of £20-30K ribs, sat on a £5-10K trailers. A crash writing off all that, and a D3 could easily reach a claim for £60-70K. With those sorts of figures, I just wouldn't want to give the insurance company anything to argue over - and an illegal non-type approved tow pack would be just that.
I'm really not usually this pedantic!

This is a similar issue to the tyre load rating ...and I suspect that unless LR can confirm that the unit is approved.... you may be compromising your insurance.
....and you fitted anything other than the Genuine LR one it wouldn't be legal.
That is the genuine LR one
It is but AFAIK not EC type approved. The D2 one that John refers to above which was standard fit to the D2 G4's is not EC type approved although entirely legal in US, AUS and SA - not even the fact that the cars were individually SVA'd for the UK lets them be used officially in the EU (and before you ask you can also buy NAS spec D2 receivers from good dealers and independents in the UK, even though they are not 'legal').
But I do find it strange that something that is entirely legal, approved and widely used in the 'land of the highly litigious' (sorry to our US colleagues), and therefore is very unlikely to open LR up to EU lawsuits it still not allowed to be used.Craig

I have both types of slide in tow bar. The 50mm ball and also the NAS (for NATO hook courtesy of Uncle Ray).
So I just went and looked at both of them and neither is stamped with any EC approval as far as I can tell, apart from the part number and manufacturing data on one side they have on the other;
50mm ball
D 16.5 kN
S 150 kg
[e11]00 - 3762
A50-X
NAS
Max Trailer weight 3500kg 7700lbs
Max Tongue weight 350kg 770lbs
I cannot see why there would be any difficulties as long as you are within these weight limits.Discovery 3 XS Auto, Stornaway, Active rear diff.

I totally agree with you Martin ...both hitches are more than the man for the job ...but as usual, the issue of EU approval is only likely to be raised by the plod, VOSA or your insurer if you are stopped and inspected or involved in a serious accident.
You makes your choices
BTW If I had the choice I'd have Uncle Ray's.....mainly because it looks 'hard' 8) 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The vairable height LR one is only 2 bolts to remove if you are worried and is EU approved - even I managed to fit it It is fugly though DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

It's not so much what it is rated to, as has it been through the Type Approval Process, specific to that vehicle - hence the time it took Witter to get a D3 one approved.
Check out the Witter Link in the post above, it spells out the law (whether you think it to be an ass or not )Craig

I hear what you are saying.
It looks like the LR Quick release 50mm ball is approved "[e11]00 - 3762" but the NAS one clearly not.
If you need to tow anything with a coupling that is not a 50mm ball then what is the choice?
If involved in any accident and the coupling was not a contributory factor to it, what would the likely outcome be?
You might end up in the same situation if you fit a Witter tow bar but another make of ball. IF I read what is written on their web site correctly! Discovery 3 XS Auto, Stornaway, Active rear diff.
