HELP!!!! - milk spilt in D4...
Had a 2l plastic bottle of milk in some shopping in the back of the car & it has leaked!
I now have around 1l of milk which has leaked into the nearside rear footwell, it's dark & wet outside & I have no cover or portable lighting but from removing some of the trim it is clear the milk is sloshing around under the carpet in the void areas.
First question, do the seats need to come out in order to get all the carpet up to get at the area underneath?
Second question, any advice on what is the best way to clear the milk up so I don't have a car that stinks every time the sun comes out??

Not sure about the seat removal, but for the milk it's a two stage process. First stage is removal, soak up as much as possible using kitchen towel and pressure from your hand, keep repeating. Or use a wet vacuum cleaner if you have one. Second Stage is to pour baking soda over the spillage area, leave it overnight and then vacuum it up. Repeat, but second time gently rub the baking soda into the carpet and again leave it overnight.

Also baking soda but in a boiling hot saturated solution, leave to dry and then vac up

Good luck! When this happened in mine it was in the boot. I found the enzyme stuff you buy for pet smells helped, but in the end I bought a new carpet from DiscoDunc when his was written off.
I’ve still got the middle section up in the roof - it’s for a D3 so may be different from the D4 but if you can’t get rid of the smell you’re welcome to have it!

That apart, I’d probably remove the seats.
However, if you are looking to remove the majority milk from the voids without too much trouble or quickly, try a straw taped to the end of a wet vac nozzle. Then make a small hole into the carpet for it to pass. Not perfect, but it works.

Its a problem for sure.
In my parents experience, nothing, and I mean nothing worked. Every damn time you got in that car there was a whiff of puke. Sold it in the end.
The only way to get rid of it is new carpets-yes a ball ache to do, but the only option.

Have to ask … was the straw for getting the vomit out ? that must have been some chunder !

Not the vomit, although of biblical proportions, very watery, it ended up on the base of the rear seats. It was juice that ended up on the floor and in cavities.
I also remember been given some home brew and the top came off. A lovely yeasty smell on the second row seats. that was hell to get rid of.

I'd be in the "sell it" camp.
My old man once spilt a load of milk in the back of his car, it never went away. He ended up p/xing the car for a similar age, higher milage version of the same model in a different colour (we blamed my mum's dislike of the colour). The salesman got a lovely low-mileage car that smelt very fragrant from the interior clean it had just had. Didn't cost us much to do the deal, I think he thought we were crazy. I sometime wonder how he felt a couple of days later once the shampoo perfume wore off and the rancid milk smell returned!!

Had to sell a Jaguar XF after my wife spilt a pint of milk in the footwell. Carpet mats replaced by rubber mats, but it had got in the main carpet below. Children complained of the smell of stilton each time they opened the car door.
D4 has rubber mats everywhere and in the boot. This time the shopping was put on the rear seat while I was away and left for a week before being cleaned up. Two valets in and I'm seriously thinking about replacing the whole rear seat assembly or just selling.

Thanks for the replies, my first thought was 'oh !' Then during a very sleepless night followed ideas about selling the car, maybe getting the insurance involved and hoping they'd cover it, then the worst case of them writing it off, and so I drifted off to the land of nod!
All those thoughts were after 2 and a half hours on my knees in the dark with a head torch with the door tread plates removed and then plastic trim below them and carpet held up during which time I got 500ml of milk out using a J cloth - I'd parked the car on a side slope so liquid ran to the low point at the back of the nsr door. I then 'rinsed' with a solution of warm water and washing powder, thought all was good until I checked under the front carpet and found the insulation backing was sodden with milk and it was pooled in the channels that the heater(?) ducts run in.
Baking soda does seem to be the stuff to use but I think this is so far past that sort of treatment that I am going to take a Stanley knife to the carpet and remove enough to get to the remainder of the milk which hopefully will be contained in the footwell. Once that's dealt with I can sort the rest out at my leisure and ultimately remove the seats and console in order to fit a replacement carpet. might even get around to fitting the nappa leather seat covers tot he seats while I'm about it!
