Been away for a while.
Thanks for the reference to the old thread.
I ordered the clip and it should be here next week.
I’ll try to fix it myself, seems feasible.

@PROFSR, yup Ii was looking at the gear assembly the other way round…
I guess I’m an example in the making of the famous Land Rover motto: Turning drivers into mechanics since 1948.

Hi there, while waiting for the clip to be delivered I took the time to raise and inspect the car. We found a substantial oil leak.Initially we thought it was from the secondary clutch pump (the one close to the gearbox) because in the past we had detected a minor loss in that area and were keeping an eye on the brake fluid reservoir. However the sizeable leak was not compatible with the fact that the reservoir was basically full. Closer inspection has revealed that the entire breather pipeline is missing and that oil leaks from the gearbox breather. I was in the car and, engine on, every time I would push the clutch pedal some oil would squirt from the small L-shaped beak on top of the gearbox.
The leak has become significant now presumably because the car has been recently serviced and the gearbox oil has been changed.
I searched the forum and found out PROFSR G has written about this issue https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/gearbox-oil-discharge-195777.html
Yet in that case the breather pipeline was in place, albeit possibly defective.
I will order and install a pipeline but meanwhile was wondering if there may reasons for the leak other than the missing pipeline and subsequently less play for the expanding gearbox oil.
As always, many thanks for any insights,

"L shaped beak"??

I'm unclear from your last post as to where you are seeing fluid leaking. Where in the images below are you seeing oil squirt from the top of the gearbox when the clutch is depressed?

*Note the position of the gearbox and transfer box breather lines!*

Hi sorry for the vagueness. I circled in red where oil squirts out and marked in blue what’s missing, basically the rubber connector and the pipe.

But that's the gearbox case, if you're seeing fluid pump out from there when the clutch is pressed there's something very odd going on. The clutch fluid line is connected to the slave cylinder which is forward of the gear case..

You can see the connection om the right of the above image.

You’re right. Indeed, initially we thought it was from the slave cylinder because it was really greasy.
I was wondering if, when pressing the clutch, something shifts in the gearbox case because this, together with the higher oil level after service and the missing pipeline that reduces the room for oil to adjust might cause the squirt.

The slave cyl for clutch actuation is located within the bell housing, and is a separate (dry) compartment!

The only component shared with the gear case is the first motion shaft which has no linear movement!
The slave cyl is a linear device but it's in the bell housing!

Who knows. If yes, they seem to be working real hard though!

Check the correct amount of oil is in there, it should be 1.6 litres (MTF BOT338) TYK500030.

Hi Profsr G
the correct amount of oil it's Ok ( 1,6 Lt. ),as I am the mechanic who replaced it.
the mysterious thing is knowing why every time the clutch pedal is pressed, there are oil squirt that come out of the breather.....

Well yes, and it's a mystery to me too. Is the fluid being forced out when the clutch pedal is pressed, or it it when the pedal is released?

Could be an issue with the slave cylinder/release bearing, but how is it managing to influence the oil level in the box?

Pressing the clutch causes the slave/bearing to expand towards the pressure plate. Could this be acting on the input shat seal in some way?

I don't fancy having to take down the box to find out!
