D4 sat nav

How do you update the sat Nav maps and how much does this cost? Anyone know when the maps are generally updated?

Not in the D4 it's not.

All sat-nav data is stored on the hard drive and can only be updated by a dealer.

HDD map upgrades for D4 are purchased via your dealer

we have a box of tricks in serv dept which when connected to car and our IDS machine it downloads the very latest map data file available from Navteq
we charge 1 hour labour to do this as it's time intensive and not just a disc flash upgrade

the hard drive is fitted into the screen ( sat nav screen ) ...it can be removed .

The connector for updating the sat nav is located under the steering wheel , behind the removable panel

I must say that the D4 Sat Nav is a huge disappointment ! You can not update the maps yourself - even after paying a fee - you can not add in POIs of your choice such as camp sites or safety cameras and there appears to be no way of setting the machine to check with you before recalculating a route! And no way of pre-planning a route indoors on your PC and then downloading it to the Sat Nav.

I had looked forward to being able to leave my Garmin 7200 at home - it is a fantastic Sat Nav but it needs to be mounted on the dash (too big for windscreen mounts) and of course every time one stops and leaves the car it has to be removed and hidden (too big for the pocket) BUT even though it is now a "discontinued" system it does all of those things that one would expect of a Sat Nav installed in a £45000.00 motor car.

sorry Ted but you are going to be a lot more disappointed yet. d4 satnav refuses to use the A34, has never heard of St Omer, uses people's driveways for roads in the New Forest, and if asked to calulate 3 route goes into a sulk and will use the most illogical route possible. Also it bases its time assumptions on your current average speed - really clever, tried to send me through central London to get from M11 to M3! Just a few of my experiences to date...

Completely agree. Sat nav is by far the worst feature on the D4. £200 TomTom is much better!

I like (not) the way that on some roads with laybys that it tells you to keep left or keep right thinking that the layby is part of the road.

Generally, I find the LR sat nav no better or worse than others. It's better than the Audi 2G system (which doesnt have full postcode database). Car manufacturer systems are miles behind standalone units.

In my D3, the SatNav CD was in a gismo under the passenger seat.

I have a similar gismo under the passenger seat in my D4.

What does this do if the SatNav equipment is now up in the dash area?

Bill Wright.
