GSM telestart?

I'm so impressed by the ingenuity and thoroughness of these instructions!

Would it be possible to use a GSM telestart unit to provide the "trigger now" signal? This would give unlimited range as long as you have GSM coverage, which is pretty much everywhere. Also you wouldn't have to mess about with pulling a cable through the firewall.

I'm also waiting eagerly for any news on triggering the interior fan for defrosting the windows.

Opodden, as far as I'm aware (and I'll be happy to be proven wrong) the GSM Telestart does not provide the necessary W-BUS signal that the latest FBH units require to start them up. If you have an earlier model car and know for sure that it will start with the old OUT switch voltage, then yes it's a winner. I am not in a possition to be able to determine one type of FBH from another though - hopefully someone who does this timer mod will let us know if their FBH is OUT controlled rather than W-BUS. Hmmm - I might just add a poll to the thread.

The 'run the fans' project is on hold until I get back to the UK and will be a slow job as I need to make sure I won't be risking a meltdown of the electronics currently controlling the blower fan. I saw a post recently that stated that Webasto no longer fit the fan modification as it causes issues with the electrics - I'm sure they own more oscilliscopes than me but I'll see what I can do; creativity is my middle name ( along with others such as idiot and muppet which turn up and are used more often Smile )

Everyone, thanks so much for all your praise Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed I hope you still feel that way once you've actually tried it.

I think what he ment with the telestart , was to replace the remote control ...ie send a text , makes a connection , starts the instant start button ..

I may be wrong ..it has been known Sad

My timer should arrive soon and the fun should start as well as the FBH!

Check this out http://www.probyte.fi/info/gsmrelay.htm a Phone controler module....

http://www.gate-opener.co.uk/index.htm - this would also work 300ms relay via gsm!

I think there may be a way to tell if it is an old or new FBH, mine has a cable in pin 2, so the connector has 4 wires going in. I suspect this is a +12v feed. Maybe the CAN bus versions only have three cables going in, mine is perhaps an old model.

I am about to give it a try with a 12V feed to see what happens Shocked

If it works I just need to buy one of the clocks off e-bay and it is job done.

Thought I'd copy another of my posts from earlier today here:

Disconutter wrote:
The D3 was in for a modified clutch today courtesy of LR, and I had asked them to check the Fuel Burner Heater was working because the last few mornings when it was below 5 Degrees I didn't hear it running or saw any steam coming out. Big Cry

When I collected the D3 tonight I was informed they had to order a replacement FBH because when it was being tested it spat diesel out of the exhaust pipe before there was a large explosion of white smoke that apparently sent everyone running for fire-extinguishers and filled the whole work-shop. I didn't laugh - honest. Whistle Well not whilst I was in the dealers afterwards .... Rolling with laughter

Suppose I shouldn't laugh too loud as it was my vehicle. Shocked

More importantly, let this be a warning for anyone out there intending some DIY testing of their FBH. If you're prepared for what can happen you should be Ok though i.e. have someone ready to remove the ignition key and then uplug all the cables connected to the FBH should it goe puff... But a Fire-extinguisher might be worth keeping close by. Rolling Eyes

Good luck with your installs. I'll be ordering my timer and bits this weekend Smile

All installed! I put the timer up by the courtesy light and put the remote receiver in the void above it as there is plenty of room and will probably get the best reception with an all round view. I got my bits from RS and maplin and the timer from Ebay (50.90 Euros + international money transfer costs but including postage).

Many thanks for all the instructions to stapldm and all the work put in!

I have a pdf of the timer operating instructions and 99 pins left for the FBH connector if any one is interested!

DIY install of FBH timer mod + optional remote

STAPLDM
A very good and very helpful tutorial thanks.
I have one of these Webasto heaters taken from a (physically) bent td6.
Looking at your photo of the socket on the heater it has 8 pins and therefore I think it is a TT-V model like mine as the others have a 6 pin socket.
It has been a heck of a struggle over the last 6 months to find out anything about it but I now have a contact in Germany who can provide a complete wiring loom with fuse box, heater relay and fuel pump plug etc for anyone doing a self fit in a vehicle which does not already have one for 100Euros plus postage.
I also have a contact in Guernsey selling the mini oval timer for £45 plus postage.
The pin outs are as follows:
Pin Assigned Function

1 Switching-on-signal Parking Heater hard wired black
2 W-Bus / Diagnostics hard wired yellow
3 Switching-on-signal Supplementary Heater hard wired grey
4 CAN-Bus low white
5 Dosing Pump blue
6 Summer/Winter switch purple
7 CAN-Bus high orange
8 Vehicle fan Triggering green
Wiring loom
1 Power supply +12V red/yellow
2 Power supply ground brown

1 Water pump (speed controlled) PWM n/c
2 Water Pump ground brown
3 Water Pump +12V black

Timer 1533, (not 1530/31):
Pin 1: 12V
Pin 2: W-Bus
Pin 3: 12V Output
Pin 4: 0V

Hope this is of use

I intend to give this a try. I'm not going to bother routing the timer into the cabin. I'll make do with the remote.

Would there be an alternative technique/hardware if I don't need the timer?

I'm not having a lot of luck with my purchases at the moment. Won an auction for a timer on ebay but the chap in Germany hasn't replied to my various emails asking for details so I can send the bank transfer (like many German ebayers, they prefer direct transfer to Paypal).
