Would there be an alternative technique/hardware if I don't need the timer?

In my own case, I was unable to start the FBH without the timer; even though I had a similar pin-out list to slats above, I couldn't drive the heater from pins one or three with any signals at all. I'm not in a position to say that this applies to all FBH units.
The timer was the only way I could generate the required w-bus signal for pin 2 - if you don't put it in the cabin ( and there's no reason to if you're not going to use it as a timer) then it would happily sit inside the waterproof box.
Just make sure it's secured so the buttons can't be pressed by it banging around in there; perhaps with soft foam over the front to protect it.

Transgenic tomato anyone?

Yes - I think I'll secrete it under the bonnet.

I speak a little German (really little) and asked hime very politely for bank details. He's come back to me to confirm the amount to pay including p&p to the UK but still hasn't provided the account info. Sad
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Morning all,

I hope I'm not about to ask a stupid question....How do I know if I have a FBH?

I understand that they are/were only fitted to certain cars and only for certain markets...is this true or do all D3s have them? Mine is a Spanish (i.e. euro-spec) MY06 SE.

If it's a stupid question, feel free to fire away (it is Friday after all). Wink

Cheers,
Paul

There will be a small exhaust and heat shield at the bottom, forward end of the left front wheel arch. (UK anyway)

Under the bonnet on a UK spec car at front left (i.e. immediately behind the headlight) is a metal unit with a Webasto plate on it.
end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

I've just had the Webasto kit fitted by JE as I was short of time and inclination, it went in with no issues and works fine. Temp gauge was almost up to normal after 20mins of preheat this morning (wasn't that cold but couldn't resist a test run Very Happy ).

Special LR-related instructions with the kit advise not to run the heater when nose-down by >5deg or tilted right by >5deg....although I can't remember seeing such a limitation in the D3 handbook - or does the tilt sensor prevent the vehicle (as opposed to the Webasto timer) from running the FBH if it detects such angles Question Question
 Cheers

Paul , open your bonnet and between the battery compartment and the near side headlight you should see this

There is the webasto heater , a small air filter (top right ) and an exhaust silencer ( bottom )

Hope this helps

it's to do with the fuel pickup in the tank - there's an internal transfer pump that fills up a fuel 'well' when the engine is running, obviously this doesn't run when only the FFBH is activated so operating at angles or with a low fuel level will drain this 'well' resulting in FFBH lockout and potentially a rough idle once the engine is started until the fuel well is replenished

10FC - Ah!! That is maybe why I did get a bit of a rough idle this morning -does the replenish pump run with the ignition on before starting do you know - or just while the engine runs?
 Cheers

It runs when the ignition is on initially then shuts down once the LP side of the fuel system is up to pressure until the engine is started, somewhere in the dim and distant past when the 'radio trick' worked, there were warnings about running the FFBH for longer than 30 mins as this would deplete the fuel reserve
