Wow, not seen anything like that before, but not surprised it blew outwards - at speed the pressure over the roof area will be low due to the speed of air over it - like an aircraft wing, as the air is going faster because of the longer route up the windscreen and over the roof. Most likely a stone or piece of metal, maybe from the other carriageway. A few million to 1 against that - get a lottery ticket Previously:

Maybe... but it would have had to have been coming down from a reasonable height
Be interesting to see what they say next week.

Glad your fine mate, that's all that really matters. At the end of the day it's a metal box with glass that can be fixed. It's the squishy bit in the middle that needs looking after

Glad you're OK DG. Have had this happen many years ago in a Peugeot 205 on the M6. Never found any object in the car - had probably bounced off, but the air pressure was enough to blow the glass out once it cracked. We thought something had exploded, and if anyone had been sitting in the back it wouldn't have been funny.
Hope you get it sorted quickly with no leaks. I discovered the next day that the sunroof I had wasn't an OEM one but an imported one that was no longer sold in the UK Had a cardboard and waterproof tape roof for a while...

I reckon he just let one go and the pressure build up was too great.
Seriously though. Bloomin' scary episode. Glad you're OK.
cheers

It possibly could have been a combination of stress and a small stone hitting the glass. It only takes a little nick to make a stressed screen or window fail dramatically. The best way to break a screen or even double glazing is to hit it with a centre punch in the corners. The scrotes in our area used the spring loaded centre puches for breaking into cars at one time. Regards, Trev.

As a slightly OT matter, and hopeing this gets sorted by LR and not this way, there was a thread many moons ago discussing whether broken sunroofs were covered like "normal" windows. Didn't really follow it to see what was what as driving a pauper level (SE) and a peasant level (S) D3 I don't have a sunroof to worry about. Hopefully someone better at searching than me can find it, also on iPhone so bit slow (phone not me, honest!!).
