Sunroof explodes !
Driving down the M4 this morning merrily minding my own business when BANG ...my sunroof exploded .
Luckily I had the sunshade drawn across or I would have had lumps of glass showering down. In the event I was covered with tiny shards in my hair and had tiny cuts on my left hand and cheek where I tried to brush them off.
I hadn't passed under a bridge nor was anything in front of me for a good 500yrds ...looking at the remaining glass it appears to have blown outwards from stress or pressure...if you look at the second picture it is bowed outward quite considerably.
I've left everything as it is and covered it with tarp as it's going to lash down later. Off to GSTD on Monday for investigation. Not a happy bunny.

Glad your OK Could have caused a horrendous accident if you'd had all that glass fall on you.

Have you called LRCS to register the event ? I would be wanting them to send someone out to investigate immediately !
AND bring you a D4 HSE as a loaner so you are mobile for the rest of the weekend before the dealer COLLECTS the D3 on a truck. Wouldn't want to be driving that around, no matter how close they may be.
Good job you had the sun screen across. It really does look bowed on the second picture As you slide down the banister of life
may no splinters point your way

Yep I was one mile from Leigh Delamere ..so rather than sit on the shoulder I went there and called them. It was fairly clear to me that there would be little they could do other than recover me, which would have meant a lot of faffing so I decided to gently make my way back home but as you say Si the call was more so to record that it had happened and my immediate thoughts that this was not due to a foreign object hitting but a stress issue.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I would video the damage and bowing too... far more informative than still images. Especially the bowing to prove it was an outward explosion and not foreign object damage. Even using your phone if no camcorder available.
I assume there is nothing in the interior that looks out of place object wise ?
Also are the seals pushed up and out ? Not knowing the construction of the roof this may not be useful.
Just get as much evidence as you can in case anyone questions that it was caused by external forces and not a manufacturing / build fault.
Assuming the glass is toughened, it would have taken a serious amount of pressure / force to shatter it (I assume).

Thanks guys !
Simon yes I will video it for sure... good idea Considering the size of the hole there are only 2 clumps of glass sitting on the sunscreen roughly 1 x 10 cm2 and 1 x 5 cm2 ...so that indicates all the remaining glass blew outwards. The whole sunroof is in tiny fragmented blocks, I don't think it is laminated TBH but it probably is toughened. There doesn't appear anything else wrong ...though I naturally haven't tried to open the roof. I want it left as is until they can take a look.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
