The vehicle needs to 'realise' that its grounded. Not exactly sure what parameters it looks at but I have always presumed this:-
All 4 wheels spinning at various speeds.
Pressure sensors in the suspension give an 'eyup the air bags are not carrying any weight' signal.
So with the above scenario to start the TC will kick in, then throw the 'light weight' info from the pressure sensors into the mix the suspension will raise.
Now here is the trick when grounded, you keep driving as gently as you can but enough to make the wheels spin, not too much that you dig 4 big holes under the tyres.
As soon as you here the 'Bing' (car going into extended mode) stop driving apply the foot brake, at the same time hold the suspension button in the UP position.
The car will now be raising automatically into extended mode (+50mm) and as you have also requested 'Super Extended' (another +50mm) mode so this will lift the vehicle about 100mm. In doing so all 4 wheels/tyres should be supporting the vehicle and in doing so they should now have enough weight to provide grip and this means you should be able to move forward.
Clearly if you are in sand get the shovel out and dig a nice shallow ramp in front of each wheel. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

If you are grounding traveling forward and are at a stop then consider reversing onto proven ground.
There is always time to switch from 4 wheel to 2 feet drive for a bit of a recce.
Not all vehicles will have the super extended mode but hopefully most will have had the software upgraded at some point:
Quote:
Additional Lift in Extended Mode
In later software a feature is available to provide additional body clearance when in extended mode. When extended mode has been invoked and the automatic lifting of the vehicle is complete, the driver can request an additional lift of the vehicle. This can be particularly useful when extended mode has to be activated on soft surfaces.
The additional lift can be requested once the raising lamp has extinguished. Press and hold the switch in the up direction for 3 seconds whilst simultaneously depressing the brake pedal. A chime from the instrument cluster will sound to confirm that the request has been accepted. The raising symbol will be illuminated while the vehicle is being lifted.

So today i was changing brake pads and swapping wheels over when I forgot to putit in gear before I jacked it up and it went into super extended mode! Looked great!
At least I know mine will do it now and it wasn't totally beached last year!
Hopefully going back there this year (if my passport arrives in time) but don't plan on trying it again!!
Getting stuck when the tides coming in and not speaking the lingo was interesting to say the least!!

Thanks to Patrick @ GAP, finally managed to get into "Super Extended Mode" using my IID tool

I use the test valves functions regularly for maintenance purposes on our D3, it does fit the bill quite well. It is not permanent and no need to readjust the height once you are done. It will adjust back to normal height (instructions will be displayed on screen) by itself. From the user manual:
“The suspension can be returned to normal operation by choosing ‘EXIT&LEAVE TEST MODE’ or pressing the Back button. The EAS ECU will also return to normal operation when the vehicle is driven or by using the raise or lower switch (center console) of the air suspension to change height mode.â€
Also, I suggest raising one axle at a time using Adjust Rear and Adjust Front. When using Adjust All, the rear will raise more quickly since the pressure will equalize (air from the front struts will go to the rears).

Can you force it to lower after with the IID tool?
I.e could you jack into super extended then put axle stands under chassis legs then force lower to beach itself on the stands and heh presto you've got your own mobile 4 post lift

Yes, it can be lowered using the same functions. As usual, appropriate jack stands should always be placed under the vehicle when working on it. It could lower by itself if there's an air leak for example.http://www.gap-diagnostic.com/

You wouldn't get much height.
I't doesn't take two seconds to get it in the air with a trolley jack anyway.Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Will the wheels actually raise off the ground though or does it rely on gravity to move the wishbone?
And this is far cooler than fannying around with a trolley jack
Thinking about it, of course, they wouldn't would they? The compressor doesn't suck the air out.
Can't say that I worry about how "cool" a trolley jack is. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC
