What did you sell to buy your Discovery 3? |

I turned in a 2004 Cayenne S for a LR3 HSE. Although the Cayenne was faster and handled really well with optional air suspension and 20" performance tires, it was riddled with so many insoluable [softwere] problems that I never felt safe or secure using it. The HSE has been much more reliable [yes, I do read the LR boards] and, even though it comes only with an automatic in the US, the LR3 has a very flexable transmission that can even be used to apply engine braking, one of many concepts that seemed to escape Porsche. I also have a 1995 standard transmission Disco 2 with 176000 miles (suspension & engine mods) which I just can't part with.

jsfmd,
Good to hear your happier with the DISCO3 than the Cayenne pepper machine
Its also good to know (in a perverse and non critical way of course) that other manufacturers suffer from SW problems.
Do they not realise that vehicles in general are getting far too complex these days ?
Also... did you end up with cash in hand after the trade in ? The Porsche is far more expensive than the LR3 or do they depreciate badly ?
Be interesting to get feedback from other modern 4x4 users on how reliable their SW systems are. So far the LR3/DISCO3 has not suffered any mechanical problems as far as I am aware.

I (and my brother) have trading in a BMW 520 TD 2001 and a Mercedes 320E 4x4 2000 for 2 new LR3 TDV6 PP ,one with alpine roof.
The first car (silver ) came in february 05 and has covered 12000 km,so far no problems and the car mak 0,86-0,98 l/1okm on long trips.
Absolutely no problems so far.Very pleased with the car.
I am waiting for the second car (bonatti grey an alpace) to come in april and then I have the integrated phone included.

Picked up our new Disco 3 TDV6 SE, Alveston red, Auto plus alpines last Tuesday, so far so good! traded in a2003 Disco 2 Td5 ES.
Completely different car to drive, very quiet, more power and ride and handling are first rate.
We do quite a bit of towing and are having a tow bar dealer fitted when they can get the electrics! in short supply apparantly.
Speaking to a customer of mine today who has a Volvo XC90 petrol, 1 year old, been in the garage for 4 weeks with problems dealer could not solve, lack of power pulling out of junctions, fuel gauge not working, finally got it back today all under warrenty except they wanted to charged him for the fuel they used in testing it on an extened run!

Porsche continued to deny problems with the transmission programming, stalls, and lurching even though the BBS's were full of complaints from many owners of 2003-2004 models in this regard. Porsche did put out some programming updates, but these "fixes" did not solve the problems.
Porsche made me a very generous offer to trade my 2004 in for a 2005 model but additing some additional options (e.g. panoramic roof) and with the change in exchange rate, the cost was prohibitive expecially since I had no way of knowing if Porsche had solved the tranny programming problems. I declined and the dealer bought my car back at his expense with some help from Porsche North America. Bottom line: we all lost money on this transaction, but it showed me that PCNA and my dealer both cared about customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. In the end, it turned out to be an even swap for the cash recovered vs. money paid for the LR3 HSE.

We had a Disco 2 TD5 that we had imported in 2000. It was a fully loaded ES 7 seat (white gold, light leather) and only cost £24,500 from an importer in Preston. That vehicle did 44,000 miles, never missed a beat and we sold it privately for £20,250 last year. Made the huge mistake of buying a Volvo V70 AWD instead (dont ask me why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time) and in less than a year dropped £7k on that wretched car. Traded that in for the beloved Disco 3. By the way these are all technically my wife's cars, but she has been relegated to the Merc as I love driving the Disco 3. I now have a RRS on order so we will end up a 2 LR car owning family (3 if we include our toy defender). Disco 4 TDV6HSE

How the hell did I miss this thread, I sold a 2003 Oslo Blue Defender 110 TD5 privately as the part exchange on the Disco 3 would have been pathetic. Guy that bought it travelled all the way up from Cornwall on the train and paid cash on the spot, keen or what. 2004 Discovery 3 - gone
2006 Discovery 3 - gone
2008 Discovery 3 GS - gone
2011 Freelander LE Special Edition - gone
2007 Discovery 3 XS - gone
2012 Discovery 4 GS - current

1999 Def 90 TDi HT 50th Anniv Special ed.
Wish I'd kept it, as no software to go wrong, and it didn't.
Could fix it with screwdrivers, spanners, zip ties and insulating tape.
Who cares if it leaked water into passenger footwell if it rained heavy, and needed a new off side rear indicator fitting every 18 mnths when it rusted as it always filled with water!
I loved it
Mike

I got rid of my Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDi Quattro (180 BHP) company car and opted out... glad I did as the Audi was returning about the same as the DISCO3 does and now I have room for everything including 7 people !
