So done a little bit more today
Got the wheel arch , liner and short turbo hose off, plus the bolts that hold the metal intercooler pipe
Looks as though I’ll need to remove the fan cowl and the fan itself to give me some more room, not got a clue how to get the metal pipe out , plus the air inlet hose needs to come out as that’s the one that’s split
Those rusty looking bolts luckily came out, took me nearly an hour as they were right little sods getting a socket on them, used a ratchet spanner on the end
Plus put a picture of the type of clips the scavenger hose uses, will replace it with a stainless steel jubilee clip seeing the access is restricted and to be honest don’t know what kind of pliers u would use anyway
All good fun, never had to remove the fan before , assume it’s left handed
As always thanks for the awesome help and most appreciated, apologises it’s so long winded , I just have to do a few hours each time

I think you knock the fan nut towards the passender side with a sharp blow.

Thks so much Pete , very grateful for the help
Indeed will get that off, found the bolts that are on top of the air inlet pipe, got the 2 x rusty nuts off further along the metal intercooler metal pipe and the other nut just below for the plastic air inlet pipe so that’s loose , also got the short turbo hose off and out
Alas think the only way to get the metal pipe out is to remove the fan and cowl assembly
Sorry I’m waffling as per usual, lol
Thks again Pete and also hope ur keeping well

Good to hear all is well
My thinking behind the replacement is I’m replacing the split air inlet pipe and the short turbo hose and front intercooler hoses with silicone ones
I just thought if I replace the metal pipe that’s all of them replaced so in theory don’t have to worry about them , along with fitting all new t bolts and stainless steel jubilee clips
Hope that makes sense

well ok.
Would have thought the stainless metal pipe would outlast the rest of the car

Many thks and to be honest I didn’t realise that pipe was stainless steel , in that case sounds like it will be best to leave it alone and just replace the other bits
Thks again Pete as that’s saved me a lot of agro as it looks a right pig to get out , hopefully the air inlet pipe isn’t to bad to replace

Hiya
Just as a side note I happen to see what’s involved in getting that metal pipe out, of course going to leave it alone
U have to remove the PAS pump and upper wishbone to get it out , am so pleased u advised me to leave it alone
Thks again Pete and next job in a few days time I’ll attempt to get the fan out

Yes you can leave it be Gary, it'll be in you way a bit but don't try to remove it. If you have the bolts out leave it that way until you have the new pipe fitted, as it may be of some use to have it loose!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Hi mate
Many thks and indeed will certainly be leaving it alone , will just give it a clean , did manage to get those 3 x bolts undone so that pipe is loose after getting that short turbo hose off, was surprised as that hose was extremely soft , could fold into itself extremely easily , have got a new silicone one with some T bolt clamps
Did order some wider jubilee clips for the air intake pipe that goes onto the turbo, last clip I fitted was only 9mm wide , I ordered some 13mm wide ones in order to secure it better , noticed some oil at that pipe
Got 3 x new stainless steel bolts as the old ones were very rusty , plus my god they were a pain to get out , finally used a rachet ring spanner , oh and a jubilee clip for the scavenger hose as those click clamps that are there look a right sod to do up , seeing access is very restricted
Thks again and good idea leaving the metal turbo intake pipe loose until I get the air intake replaced , plus noticed there was only one bolt securing the air intake pipe onto the fan cowl and was loose
Hopefully once the fan and cowl is out that air intake pipe will just come out
Just trying to cover as much as I can so it’s done and dusted , am so grateful for the awesome help as it’s extremely appreciated , thank u
Ps, hope ur good mate

If you don't have the fan clutch spanners you can just shock it off as Pete K says, usually with a large adjustable wrench. It's a left hand thread, so just make sure you tighten it correctly or it will unthread itself as soon as the clutch cuts in again and become an under bonnet "Catherine Wheel" yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Bless u, indeed I bought a set a while back, fingers crossed there the right ones
As a side note the other day I saw a utube video of a garage mechanic using an air chisel straight off the bat to remove a viscous fan, admittedly not something I would do unless I assume it simply won’t come off with the spanners

That works too, I have used an air chisel many times over the years but with an old adjustable wrench cut down to a stubby, and place the chisel against that. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Hi mate
That sounds a very good way of doing it , Alas he used a sharp chisel directly on the nut
Quick update , finally the wider stainless steel jubilee clips turned up as I think that will provide more clamping force onto the full width of the hose, yeh i know I need to get out more, lol, just wish to ensure I’ve covered all the bases on installation of the new air inlet pipe
Fingers crossed Sunday looks a nice day to try and get abit more done

Plus may i ask the wisdom of the forum members please , the screws that hold the air intake pipe on top of the fan cowl don’t tighten up properly , looks as though someone has stripped the threads in the past
So I’m wondering if I fill the screw holes using a glue gun , then drill a small pilot hole , then after it’s gone off to then thread the screws into the holes
Was just wondering if anyone may have done this plse or if there is a better way , just don’t want to spend out on another top fan cowl , plus in another thought don’t want thag pipe to become looks eo
Found an online picture of the screw holes I mean, many thks as always
